The City of Augusta, Georgia Considers Banning the Box

Augusta officials have thrown their support behind a "ban the box" proposal from Mayor Hardie Davis which would prevent the city from inquiring about applicants' conviction history during the initial application process.

The Augusta Commission voted 7-2 to eliminate the box from city job applications. Mayor Davis said banning the box will encourage those with criminal histories to contribute to society after their rehabilitation. About 600 individuals are released from prisons to the Augusta area annually.
